Charlie (Walter Matthau) decides to go on a sea cruise in an attempt to woo a wealthy single lady. He bamboozles his irascible brother-in-law, Herb (Jack Lemmon), into coming with him, but the latter is not pleased to discover that their 'luxury accommodation' is deep in the bowels of the ship.
