Barton (Brian Deacon) is a soldier in World War 2 England. He meets Alice (Glenda Jackson), who is looking after her farm as her husband is a Prisoner of War in Japan. He stays overnight and then decides to dessert and stay with Alice. People in the village are told he is her sister and Barton dresses for the part. Army Sergeant (Oliver Reed) comes to the farm, giving Barton undesired attention.
